Minneapolis 9/1/13

Up early for the Caribou coffee shop and red white and blue bread.  Then a tour of the warehouse district and the Stone Arch Bridge.  We hiked on a winding trail to see St. Anthony Falls and Lock and Dam # 1.  Then we toured The Sculpture Gardens.  It has lovely landscaping.  We shared a carnita burrito at Chipoltle's and did some serious shopping.  We hit three Good Will stores.  I bought more swim suits and  drapes for the condo for $4.00.

I saw her son's Steve's house that he recently purchased.  We both had the short sale experience.  It's a lovely old home with hard wood floors.  I saw his barbershop the night I arrived.  It has a western theme.  Steve and I had to convince Rita that gelato's were something she should try.  Next to his barbershop in Lynn Lake (Uptown) is a cafe that serves gelato's worthy of any Italian town.  Back at the condo Rita and I discovered we have similar TV habits:  Doc Martin, Law and Order, The Closer.  Dick arrived from visiting his mother.  We swapped stories about living on a substandard farm.  I usually can win the contest for greatest poverty and hardships.  I slept well in her spare bedroom.  The beds have a topper that I must get the name of.  My feet always hurt at the end of the day.  Rita's runs me ragged!

9/2/13  I leave at noon.  We start the day with coffee at Dunn Brothers.  Dick, Rita and I talk aging hippy politics for awhile.  Time for one last tour:  Nicolette Island.  On the trip home I got a seat on the upper deck.  There is an emergency exit on the roof.  I guess if the bus tips on its side this is how I get out.  I like the Megabus experience.  I am going to use it to visit Terry in Columbia.

Rita was a most gracious hostess and seemed to know exactly what I liked to do.
Minneapolis August 31

Up early,  Bought cherry scones and Red White and Blue bread at Great Harvest.  Ate scones at coffee shop outside.  Minneapolis is a great place.  Impossible to go very far before you run into a lake or river.  Drove on West River Parkway and encountered four garage sales.  Bought a book and a souvenir of the trip.  It was more southwest that midwest Native American art but it was collected by a midwesterner.  Saw Minehaha Falls.  Very beautiful but Rita explained that sometimes it can be dry.  They needed to open a fire hydrant for a photo op for a presidential visit.  Toured the Veterans Home, beautiful old buildings.  Glad to see one state is treating veterans right.

Now for some real civilization:  The Mall of America.  It has an amusement park right in the middle which makes it a really loud place.  Tried to get someone at the Apple Store it help me figure out why I can't send e-mail from my Ipad but we would have needed to waited too long.  Hit Rita's favorite bead store instead where I helped her restrain herself from purchasing too many necklaces.  Then Rita drove some more and we saw Joan of Art's house.  I could't download the pictures Rita sent but I can show you from my e-mail when I visit.  This place would be impossible to describe but I bet you can get pictures off the internet.

Rita never stops.  We went to the Salvation Army store and I bought two swim suits.  Then back to Rita's condo were I got in an hour of exercise before lightening appeared and we went in.

Minneapolis, August 2013: Day 1

8/30/13  Got to Canal and Jackson 2 hours early because I was unsure of  exact location.  Mega bus had an air conditioned bus to wait.  Left on time.  First stop was Madison that a 20 minute stop at Wendy's at Houghton WI.  Had w-fi connection.  Was able to receive but not send e-mail on my new I-pad.  I have an hour of instruction at the Apple store but don't remember much.  Rita met the bus at the Minneapolis parking lot but I snuck out the side door and we had to connect by cell phone.  We went to Whole Foods and bought Pizza that we ate at the lake and watched ducks and geese and the sunset.  Home to Rita's condo and early bed.
